Minister Masutha engages with the legal professionals

15 December 2015

As part of the department’s mandate to create a transformed and efficient justice system, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Advocate Michael Masutha (MP) today addressed women in the legal profession at a dialogue aimed at reflecting on State litigation policy and mobilizing the profession on the critical issue of gender transformation across the sector.

The strategy aims to provide an effective State litigation management statutory framework by 2020, to reduce the litigation costs by the State and to contribute to the transformation of the legal profession. Representatives from the various client departments and the profession were invited to make inputs to the strategy.

Minister Masutha also reminded the delegates that: “The voice of women must be heard because access to justice is not only about access for the public to legal services and courts, but also to the profession. South African women make up 52% of the population, and this demographic should be reflected in the profession.”

Minister Masutha concluded by calling on women in the legal profession to actively become involved in claiming their place in the legal fraternity to ensure that transformation of the sector becomes a reality.
